Japanese Firm Wins Bid for Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction Work

A Japanese private company Kubota Metawater Joint Venture has won a bid to construct a US$27 million large-scale wastewater treatment plant at Choeung Ek Lake in the southern part of Phnom Penh.

The bidding ceremony was held in Tokyo, Japan on 12 April.

With the capacity to treat water up to 5,000 cubic metres/day, the Choeung Ek water treatment plant will be large enough to manage wastewater from major districts such as Chamkarmon, Khan 7 Makara, and Boeung Keng Kang.

This water treatment plant project was funded by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for which the grant agreement was signed in November 2019. According to the initial plan, construction should have already begun in late 2020 but was postponed to April 2021 due to the delay in impact resettlement works. (Read more)
