New Roads to Rebuild Face of Sihanoukville

The Royal Government of Cambodia is spending US$294 million on infrastructure in Sihanoukville city, building 34 roads to help transform the face of this beach city with new infrastructure, commercial buildings, and an attractive tourism sector.

The breaking ground ceremony of the 34-road construction project was held on November 16 under the auspices of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The 34 roads will have a cumulative length of 84km with three roundabouts, and 6 bridges totalling 252m in length. The roads are being constructed by seven different companies and are expected to take eight months to complete.

Reports from the Preah Sihanoukville provincial hall show that the 34 roads are divided into three categories –boulevard, street, and road.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that once all the roads are complete, Sihanoukville will become a modern attractive city and Cambodia’s second economic pole.

“By 2020, Sihanoukville city will dramatically change its face both in roads and buildings…Sihanoukville city will become a potential attractive tourism hub, with commercial centres, and a gateway of Cambodia’s economic growth,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen said.

In the 2030 master plan, the government sets Preah Sihanoukville province as Cambodia’s sustainable national development pole through developing a modern city, beautiful beach resorts, a multi-purpose special economic zone, an international gateway, national logistics centre, and industrial centre which are harmony with a pleasant living environment.
