Feasibility Study Agreed for Phnom Penh-Battambang-Poipet Expressway

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has granted permission to a private firm to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of an expressway linking Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Poipet, announced HE Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, during his site inspection of the Third Ring Road construction on 28 February 2023.

“Although National Road No. 5 has been expanded from two lanes to four, a private company has expressed interest in constructing a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) expressway from Phnom Penh to Battambang to Poipet”, said the minister.

Citing the risks posed by limiting function of this newly developed infrastructure, H.E Sun Chantol went further, saying that “they (the private company) think that even though the National Road No. 5 already has four lanes, but cows crossing and numerous hazardous crossings can still cause slow traffic. As such, the firm proposed the Phnom Penh-Battambang Expressway to improve travel safety and efficiency.”

“The company has been granted approval to proceed with the feasibility study, and we have no objections to the investment” as confirmed by HE Sun Chanthol, “Additionally, travellers will have the option to choose between using the expressway or National Road No. 5 without any issues.”

It is noteworthy that the Phnom Penh-Battambang-Poipet expressway is the fourth to be studied, while the third expressway feasibility study from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is nearing completion and could lead to the signing of a framework agreement in September 2023. This development will transform the real estate landscape in these areas, presenting new opportunities for investors and developers alike.
