Premier Hun Sen pushes for more SEZs along border

The Head of the Royal Government of Cambodia has pushed for the establishment of more special economic zones on the border with Vietnam in order to attract more investment from Vietnam in Cambodia.

The establishment of SEZs has been pushed after Cambodia has already established special economic zones in Bavet town Svay Rieng province and a special economic zone in Tbong Khmum province.

“I want more SEZs on the Vietnamese-Cambodian border aiming at attracting Vietnamese investors and other investors to invest in Cambodia for exports,” said Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia at the hand-over ceremony of the Cambodian Border Market in Tbong Khmum province held on Monday.

Additionally, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the investment on the border contributes to the development of the border region, especially the cooperation between the two countries.

“It is the form of turning the former battlefield into a market for development and the border line into a friendly border with peace, cooperation and development,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen said.

Regarding the establishment of more special economic zones along the border, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has conducted recent studies to seek greater understanding on investment and trade to compile a mechanism to boost the establishment of more special economic zones along border areas, while drafts of a new law on investment and a new law on special economic zones has been completed.

CDC Secretariat General H.E. Sok Chandasophea said the visits aimed to promote the government’s vision for boosting industrial development along border areas and to understand the real situation of investment and trade activities in the border areas for compiling the mechanism to attract more investment.

Currently, there are active 23 SEZs operating in Cambodia, with 490 factories generating 130,000 jobs, according to the CDC.
