Renewable Energy Accounts for 40% of Cambodia’s Total Energy Mix

Renewable energy in Cambodia, mainly sourced from hydropower, solar energy, and biomass energy, accounted for 40% percent of the kingdom’s total energy mix in 2021.

In his opening remarks at the 40th ASEAN Ministers and Energy Meeting and Related Meetings on 15 September, Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen said  Cambodia has actively integrated renewable energy sources into the energy mix.

“Cambodia will continue to focus on the development of energy efficiency and renewable energy to the fullest of Cambodia’s energy supply system, along with the reduction of the development of energy sources that use fossil fuels, such as coal and oil,” he added.

The Cambodian government has recently pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030. Cambodia will also no longer approve or build coal-fired power plants and dams on the Mekong River, but rather turn to green renewable energy such as solar power. (Read more)

By 2023, seven solar power plants with a total capacity of 495 megawatts will be operational, contributing about 20% of Cambodia’s total energy supply.
