S. Korean Company, Daehan Corporation, Proposes Plastic Waste Processing Plant in Sihanoukville

South Korean company Daehan Corporation is eyeing the establishment of a cutting-edge plastic waste processing plant in Sihanoukville. The project aims to transform plastic waste into an essential part of daily life in the region, contributing to environmental sustainability, according to the presentation of the company at Sihanoukville Provincial Hall on September 7, 2023.

Mr. KIM SANG YOUNG, Director of Daehan Corporation, revealed the company’s extensive experience in plastic waste processing, hailing from Jeju Island, Korea. He expressed the company’s intention to extend its operations to Sihanoukville to play a pivotal role in reducing plastic bag usage and plastic waste in Cambodia.

Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had set up a factory in Kampong Speu province, offering compensation ranging from 250 to 700 riels per kilogram of plastic waste. Unfortunately, this initiative was impeded by the pandemic, leading to the temporary closure of plastic waste processing facilities.

Daehan Corporation plans to implement a waste sorting and recycling system in Sihanoukville, focusing on landfill sorting. The process will exclusively target plastic waste, transforming it into various materials that cater to the daily needs of the local population.

HE Kouch Chamroeun, the Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, expressed his full support for the project and allocated land within the landfill area for the construction of the processing plant. However, the land transfer process is pending.

Governor Chamroeun also advised the company delegation to visit the landfill, emphasizing that Cambodia’s garbage is mixed and unsorted, including kitchen waste, plastic waste, and various other waste types. The governor encouraged the company to conduct a detailed local study to enable the implementation of an effective waste sorting system, with a focus on plastic waste.

In addition to Sihanoukville, Save The Lives (Cambodia) Co., Ltd has previously unveiled ambitious plans for Siem Reap. The company intends to construct an urban solid waste recycling plant, repurposing a solid waste landfill site spanning over 5 hectares. (Read more)
