Serei Sophorn Welcomes New 11 Hectare Landfill

In a significant development to enhance urban environmental management around the Tonle Sap Lake, the government officially inaugurated over 11 hectares of landfill on 17 January 2025. This project, part of the Phase 2 initiative, received support through a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The landfill in Kangvea village in Sangkat Kampong Svay was constructed by Heng Sambath Import Export, Transport, and Construction and took 10 months to complete. It serves as a crucial facility for around 128,208 residents of nearby areas, including Sangkat Makak, Kampong Svay, Preah Ponlea, Teuk Thla, O’Ambel, Phneat, and Koh Pong Sat. The landfill is expected to remain operational until 2040.

HE Ros Vanna, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works, urged the community to utilise the landfill effectively by promoting composting and ensuring that technical standards handle waste. He highlighted the potential of this project to bolster the national economy by attracting tourism, generating job opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of residents.

The Ministry of Public Works also noted its commitment to sustainability, having previously established landfills in several provinces, including Sihanoukville, Battambang, Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot, Kep, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Kratie, and Stung Treng. The initiative underscores the government’s continued efforts to improve waste management and public health nationwide.
