The Bassac River Bridge Nears Spectacular Completion to Transform Phnom Penh Infrastructure

Phnom Penh is rapidly advancing toward an era of unprecedented urban connectivity as the highly anticipated Bassac River Bridge construction project charges toward its final phases. As of early July 2026, this iconic twin concrete bridge connecting Chak Angre Krom and Prek Pra has achieved a spectacular 79% completion rate. This major milestone was underscored during a comprehensive on-site progress evaluation led by HE Soung Heng, State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the Project Director, on July 9, 2026. This vital infrastructure initiative has maintained tremendous momentum since its official groundbreaking on February 19, 2024, an event proudly presided over by Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.

The remarkable execution of the project highlights world-class engineering standards. A detailed breakdown from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport reveals that the critical foundation phase stands at 100% completion. Similarly, the robust substructure and the extensive superstructure of the approach bridges have both reached a perfect 100% mark. Meanwhile, construction of the main bridge superstructure has successfully advanced to 84% completion, and the interconnected road network has progressed to 51%. This includes the 804.30-meter connecting road and the 1,541-meter access ramps, both hitting their respective 50% benchmarks with precision.

During his inspection, HE Soung Heng highly commended the Shanghai Construction Group for its outstanding execution of the project, noting that all completed and ongoing works strictly adhere to technical specifications and contractual obligations. The contractor was praised not only for engineering quality but also for preserving aesthetic appeal across the structure. To ensure uninterrupted operations during the ongoing rainy season, the Project Management Unit has been instructed to further enhance workplace safety measures and adapt to rising river levels. Additional directives include a meticulous review of concrete pavement surfaces to guarantee driving safety, the optimization of high-illumination lighting systems, and the implementation of lush green landscaping around both roundabouts and the bridge itself to enhance the city’s visual charm.

Upon its final inauguration, the Chak Angre Krom to Prek Pra crossing will officially stand as the seventh bridge built across the Bassac River. It proudly joins the ranks of six other completed structures that have fundamentally reshaped regional transit, including the Koh Pich to Koh Norea bridge, the twin Preah Monivong bridges, the Samraong bridge, the Koh Anlong Chen bridge, and the Koh Thom bridge. This masterpiece of modern engineering is poised to dramatically reduce congestion, foster local trade, and elevate the standard of living for residents across Phnom Penh’s southern districts.
