Field Assessments Underway for Kandal Province New Strategic Bridge

A joint delegation evaluates four potential sites for the Koh Khsach Tonlea crossing to enhance rural connectivity and market access

In a significant step forward for Cambodia’s infrastructure development, a multi-institutional technical team has launched a comprehensive field survey to determine the optimal location for the upcoming Koh Khsach Tonlea Bridge project in Kandal Province. The joint delegation conducted field inspections and technical evaluations across four selected potential sites on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. This mission aims to compare the geographical, environmental, and structural feasibility of each location to ensure the bridge delivers maximum long-term benefit for local communities and the regional economy.

The extensive field mission brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the technical working group from the Koh Khsach Tonlea Bridge Project Management Unit under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, known as MPWT PMU-KTB. They were joined by the project’s technical consulting consortium, consisting of Chodai Company Limited and ES International Consultants Company Limited. Other essential participants included specialists from the environmental and social impact assessment team, officials from the General Department of Resettlement, and representatives alongside the NTU consultant team from the European Investment Bank. Local authorities also actively supported the mission, led directly by the commune chief of Koh Khsach Tonlea.

To gather precise data and evaluate each of the four locations comprehensively, the technical experts deployed advanced aerial drones to capture high-definition imagery and map the topography from above. Alongside the aerial surveys, ground teams conducted meticulous examinations of the soil composition and the stability of the riverbanks at each site. A critical component of the field study involved evaluating any potential environmental and social disruptions that might arise during construction or long-term operation, ensuring that the selected site minimizes negative impacts on local residents while optimizing transport efficiency.

This bridge initiative represents a vital component of broader efforts to integrate rural agricultural zones with primary commercial markets. Funded with support from international development partners, including the European Investment Bank, the bridge will connect the island-like territory of Koh Khsach Tonlea to the mainland road network, dramatically reducing travel times, lowering logistics costs for local farmers, and fostering sustainable socio-economic growth across Kandal Province.
