SR takes drastic measures to strengthen city cleanliness, big fines for public littering

Siem Reap provincial authorities have taken drastic measures to strengthen waste management and improve city cleanliness by imposing heavy fines on public littering, as the city currently has more than 500 tons of garbage per day.

The move is to raise the profile of Siem Reap to another level in addition to the new 38 roads, sewer system, and garden that have been completed recently.

Siem Reap Deputy Governor Mr Pov Piseth said that from the new year onwards, the provincial administration will fine those who put the garbage in the wrong bin, throw it away without proper packaging, or dump them improperly.

“The provincial authorities will use the services of three companies to collect and store garbage to increase the efficiency,” he added.

The provincial authority has also cooperated with JICA planning to set up a new 10ha standardized landfill in Anlong Pei village, Trapeang Thom commune, Prasat Bakong district.

Due to these efforts, Siem Reap has recently won the ASEAN Clean Tourist City award. (Read more)
