Cambodian Islands Connected: Submarine Transmission Line Sparks New Era of Development and Accessibility

In a significant milestone for island residents and the region’s burgeoning investment landscape, the official launch of a submarine transmission line connecting the islands off the coast of Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces has taken place. This transformative project establishes a medium voltage network that seamlessly integrates island communities with the national grid, providing access to affordable electricity and bolstering economic activities in the area.

The inauguration ceremony, held on 21st June, witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including HE Keo Ratanak, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister and Director General of Electricite du Cambodge, alongside HE Kouch Chamroeun, the Governor of Sihanoukville. This momentous occasion marked a new chapter in the development of these islands, poised to unlock their full potential.

The medium voltage network spans across several islands, connecting Koh Mneas, Koh Ta Taem, Koh Sdach, Koh Samit, Koh Ampil, and Koh Smach in Koh Sdach commune, Kirisakor district, Koh Kong province, to Koh Rong commune in Koh Rong City, Preah Sihanouk Province. This remarkable feat of engineering ensures reliable and efficient electricity supply to these island communities, promoting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

HE Kouch Chamroeun emphasized the positive impact of the newly established electricity grid, highlighting its potential to lower the cost of living on the islands. The Royal Government of Cambodia’s investment in this project aims to unlock the islands’ investment potential, generating employment opportunities and driving sustainable development in the region.
