Svay Rieng Irrigation Upgrade Surpasses Seventy Percent Mark to Enhance Regional Farming

O Srangam canal restoration project in Rumduol district nears completion to secure water for over three hundred hectares of seasonal crops

The modernization of Cambodia’s rural water infrastructure reached a significant milestone this week as the O Srangam main canal irrigation system in Svay Rieng province was reported to be more than 70% complete. This progress reflects the ongoing national effort by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to not only expand irrigation networks but also to implement rigorous maintenance schedules that ensure the long-term sustainability of these vital public assets. The current status of the project was confirmed during a field inspection led by Mr. Phang Vy, Director of the Department of Agricultural Irrigation, on April 27, 2026.

Located within the geographical heart of the Rumduol district, the O Srangam project has maintained a steady construction pace throughout the early months of the year. According to the site assessment provided by Mr. Phang Vy, the cumulative progress as of late April has officially surpassed the 70 percent threshold of the total development plan. This development is part of a broader provincial strategy to stabilize water access in areas that have traditionally been vulnerable to the unpredictable nature of seasonal rainfall.

The technical scope of the restoration is comprehensive, involving several layers of water management infrastructure. Key components of the ongoing work include the dredging and rehabilitation of a 2,800-meter main canal, as well as the development of three secondary canal lines, designated as SC1 through SC3, which span a total length of 2,270 meters. Additionally, engineers are finalizing a 1,500-meter inlet canal designed to feed the system. To manage the flow and distribution of water effectively, the project incorporates 16 distinct hydraulic and artistic structures, including three pipe culverts for the main canal, five for the secondary canals, an intake structure, two drainage systems, three water gates, and two specialized distribution structures.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the O Srangam irrigation system is expected to transform the agricultural productivity of the region. The Ministry projects that the completed network will have the capacity to provide consistent irrigation for 339 hectares of farmland during the rainy season and support 272 hectares during the dry season. This enhanced water security will directly benefit farming families residing in the Svay Chek and Meung Pou communes of the Rumduol district, providing them with the necessary resources to engage in year-round cultivation and improve their overall economic resilience.
