Svay Rieng Irrigation Project Reaches 30% Completion to Support 2,000 Hectares of Farmland

The ongoing restoration of the Kampong Chrey Kraom creek in Svay Rieng province has marked a significant step forward, with construction work officially reaching nearly 30% completion. This milestone was confirmed following a site inspection on April 26, 2026, by Mr. Thang Vyutha, Director of the Engineering Department at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. The project stands as a vital component of the government’s larger effort to stabilize water management for agricultural communities in the region, aligning with national goals for rural resilience and resource efficiency.

During his visit to the Phase 1 site in Svay Thom commune of the Svay Chrum district, Mr. Thang Vyutha reported that the technical progress stands at approximately 28%. In a directive to site managers and engineering teams, he emphasized the necessity of strict adherence to established technical standards and project specifications. This rigorous approach is intended to ensure that the infrastructure remains resilient and provides long-lasting benefits to the community while keeping the project on its projected timeline and ensuring quality control for the public investment.

Initiated on February 26, 2026, the restoration project focuses on two critical infrastructure goals designed to modernize the local waterway. The first involves the comprehensive dredging and rehabilitation of a 5,500-meter stretch of the Kampong Chrey Kraom creek to maximize its flow and storage capacity. Additionally, the project includes the installation of 24 specific hydraulic and artistic structures designed to regulate and optimize the distribution of water throughout the neighboring agricultural landscape. These improvements are part of a broader trend of technical modernization within Cambodia’s provincial irrigation networks.

Once the restoration is finished, the upgraded water system will have the capacity to irrigate more than 2,000 hectares of rice fields. This will enable local farmers to maintain steady crop production during both the rainy and dry seasons, significantly reducing their vulnerability to environmental fluctuations and seasonal water scarcity. By securing a reliable water supply, the initiative supports the broader national agenda of improving food security and fostering economic growth within the Kingdom’s rural sectors, ensuring that agricultural output remains sustainable year-round.
