Water Infrastructure Expansion Gains Momentum in Kampong Cham

The ongoing efforts of the Royal Government of Cambodia to modernize its agricultural water infrastructure have marked another significant step forward, with the restoration of the Svay Meas Canal in Kampong Cham province reaching 55 percent completion. Spanning across crucial agricultural zones, the rehabilitation project is designed to provide sustainable water management and irrigation to more than 900 hectares of local farmlands. The progress of this vital hydrological development was verified during an on-site inspection conducted on May 15, 2026, by Thang Viyouthda, the Director of the Engineering Department at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology.

The Svay Meas Canal system serves as a geographical lifeline for rural communities, winding through Sampong Chey commune in Cheung Prey district and expanding into Boeng Nay commune within Prey Chhor district. Upon completion, the comprehensive project will feature a total rehabilitated length of 4,360 meters alongside the construction of 12 strategic engineering structures. By channeling vital water supplies from the Teuk Chhar reservoir through the Thmor Da canal network, the infrastructure serves a dual purpose: expanding the region’s year-round irrigation footprint for rice production and providing a reliable drainage pathway to alleviate seasonal flooding during the peak of the monsoon season. Project managers indicate that work is proceeding smoothly and is on track for final completion in the upcoming period.

This initiative in Kampong Cham aligns closely with a broader national campaign spearheaded by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to fortify rural economies against climate variability. It mirrors similar hydrological achievements across the kingdom, such as the O Srangam main canal system in Svay Rieng province, which recently progressed past its 70 percent completion milestone. By systematically linking primary reservoirs to secondary agricultural channels, Cambodia continues to build a resilient network of water security, directly enhancing the livelihoods of rural farmers and stabilizing national food production systems.
