Ministry of Public Works Strengthens Operations at Kampot Wastewater Treatment Plant to Secure Environmental Sustainability and Coastal Tourism

Effective wastewater management and coastal environmental protection have become central pillars in Cambodia’s strategy to build resilient urban centers and elevate its competitiveness across Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape. Reinforcing this agenda, HE Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, led a high-level delegation to inspect operational progress at the Kampot Wastewater Treatment Plant. The field visit aimed to assess post-completion operations and maintenance protocols, ensuring that the critical infrastructure delivers sustainable sanitation, improved public health, and long-term environmental protection for local residents.

Representing a major step forward for urban sanitation, the Kampot wastewater and drainage network involved a total investment of approximately $20 million, funded through a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Construction commenced on October 25, 2019, reaching completion on September 30, 2023, before its official inauguration on December 15, 2023, presided over by HE Peng Ponea. Spanning 9.84 hectares, the facility manages a catchment zone covering 395.72 hectares across four sangkats in Kampot town. Technically, the plant holds the capacity to collect and treat 3,360 cubic meters of wastewater per day, complemented by a stormwater drainage system capable of pumping 180 cubic meters per hour to mitigate urban flooding.

The ongoing operationalization of Kampot’s wastewater facility aligns with broader regional initiatives across ASEAN, where coastal destinations in Thailand and Vietnam are expanding secondary treatment capabilities to protect marine ecosystems and sustain tourism growth. By mitigating the discharge of untreated wastewater into local waterways and coastal marine zones, Kampot secures its reputation as an eco-conscious destination while boosting investor confidence in the hospitality and infrastructure sectors.
