Kampong Speu Major Water Development Project Reaches One Fifth Completion to Secure Regional Supply

Spanning across Aoral district the strategic Stung Khliech reservoir will hold over one hundred million cubic meters of water upon its scheduled completion in late 2028

In a significant step toward bolstering Cambodia’s climate resilience and agricultural infrastructure, the Stung Khliech water resource development project in Kampong Speu province has achieved twenty percent completion as of mid-2026. According to an update published on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology on June 24, 2026, the strategic initiative is progressing steadily along the upper reaches of the Prek Thnot River. Designed to optimize water management across the province, the reservoir will possess a massive total storage capacity of 115 million cubic meters once it is fully operational.

The project is situated in a crucial geographical corridor, specifically spanning Trapeang Thmier village within Ta Sal commune and Samaki village inside Reasmey Samaki commune, both located in the Aoral district. Positioned approximately 82 kilometers away from the provincial capital of Chbar Mon town, the facility is designated as a critical asset for long-term water management. Ministry officials emphasized that this development represents a key component of the state’s strategic framework to regulate regional water distribution.

The extensive construction blueprint incorporates several key infrastructural components to ensure efficient operations. The development features one main dam structure, one spillway, one specialized water gate, and a dedicated dam management building. To facilitate logistics and connectivity, the project also includes the construction of a 13-kilometer access road equipped with a comprehensive series of drainage culverts built along its path.

The entire construction timeline is slated to span 36 months, having officially commenced in December 2025 with an expected completion date in December 2028. As engineers and construction crews hit the twenty percent milestone this summer, the timely progression of the Stung Khliech development is expected to significantly enhance water security and support sustainable agricultural growth for the surrounding communities.
