Preserving History: the 118yrs old Battambang Provincial Hall Transformed into a Captivating History Museum

The iconic Battambang Provincial Hall, with its rich heritage spanning 118 years, has undergone a remarkable transformation into the Battambang Museum of History. The Ministry of Tourism’s official Facebook page announced this exciting development on 11 May 2023, inviting visitors to delve into the captivating past of Battambang.

Originally constructed in 1905 as the residence of the former provincial governor, Lok Chumteav Katathon Chhum, during the Thai rule over Battambang, this architectural gem holds immense historical significance. Hailing from the Bien family (Abai Vong house), which governed Battambang for six generations, Katathon Chhum left an indelible mark on the province’s history.

Following the province’s return to Cambodia through the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907, the building transitioned into the Battambang Provincial Hall until 2005. Now, under the skillful guidance of an Italian architect, this splendid structure has been lovingly transformed into a heritage building housing the Battambang Museum of History.

Visitors to the museum will be treated to a captivating journey through Battambang’s storied past. Discover the architectural grandeur of the historic building, marvel at classical instruments, explore the legacy of Battambang’s provincial governors, and admire paintings created by renowned artists hailing from the province.

This immersive experience is open to both national and international tourists, with a modest entrance fee of only 1,000 Riel for Cambodian visitors and 12,000 Riel for foreigners. Step inside the museum’s halls and embark on a voyage through time, uncovering the rich cultural tapestry and significant milestones that have shaped Battambang.

The transformation of the Battambang Provincial Hall into a captivating history museum serves as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. It offers a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with the province’s vibrant history, bridging the gap between past and present. As Battambang continues to evolve, this remarkable museum stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of a bygone era.
