The Digital Brain Behind the New Electric Tramway in Canada

As Québec City, Canada, moves forward with its ambitious plan for a 100% electric tramway, local transit authorities are turning to advanced digital modeling to ensure the project’s success.

The Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) has integrated Bentley OpenPaths software to create a comprehensive virtual map of the city’s mobility. This technology acts as a high-tech crystal ball, allowing planners to see exactly how the new tramway will change the way people move across the region.

Leveraging Bentley OpenPaths enabled RTC to create a comprehensive model, accurately simulate various multimodal scenarios, and optimize demand forecasting.

In the past, planning for such a massive project was difficult because older tools struggled to show how a new tram line might affect bike paths or bus routes simultaneously.

Bentley OpenPaths solves this by combining every method of travel—from walking and cycling to driving and riding the bus—into one unified system. This gives city experts the ability to simulate various scenarios and predict where the highest demand for travel will be before a single track is even laid.

Beyond the technical benefits, the software is playing a crucial role in winning public trust. Because the system produces clear visual data and reliable forecasts, the RTC can easily explain their decisions to residents and government leaders.

By using these data-driven insights, Québec City is confidently building a more connected and sustainable future, making it easier for citizens to leave their cars at home and opt for a greener commute.

Working in an open modeling platform streamlined collaboration and communication among internal and external stakeholders and consultants.
