Ground Broken on First Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Phnom Penh

The Phnom Penh Capital Administration started construction on Tuesday on the first standard faecal sludge treatment plant, which will contribute to the proper management of sludge and the processing of sludge into organic fertiliser for local agriculture.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, HE Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh, said that the faecal sludge treatment plant would contribute to the improvement of public hygiene in response to the growth rate of the people and urbanisation expansion.

HE Khuong Sreng stated that in 2001, 26,000 cubic metres of sludge per year was generated by the population of Phnom Penh. It is estimated that by 2035, the sludge in Phnom Penh will increase to 330,000 cubic metres per year, which requires the proper arrangement of the faecal sludge treatment plant in accordance with technical standards that do not harm the environment.

Built on over 3 hectares in Kamboul district, the plant is funded by the Association Internationale des Maires Francophones, an international organisation of mayors of cities in French-speaking countries, headquartered in Paris.
