CDC Invites Chinese Companies to Invest in Designated 1k Hectare of Land Near New Siem Reap Airport

A senior official of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) is paving the way for Chinese investment giant Yunnan Construction Group to establish a special economic zone near the cutting-edge Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. This strategic initiative, anticipated to unfold in 2024, holds the promise of catalysing investments and fostering cross-border economic cooperation.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the CDC, HE Suon Sophal, expressed unwavering optimism during a meeting with a high-profile delegation from China’s Yunnan Provincial Department of Commerce, led by Deputy Director General Ma Jun on 29 December. The focus of the discussions centred on propelling investment projects in Cambodia and fortifying cross-border economic ties within the Mekong-Lancang and Greater Mekong Subregion frameworks.

HE Suon Sophal articulated his expectations for the Yunnan Construction Group to spearhead investments in approximately 1,000 hectares of prime land adjacent to Siem Reap International Airport. The envisioned special economic zone aims to beckon agro-food industries from Yunnan Province, aligning with the burgeoning needs of the local food market and tapping into the region’s untapped potential.

Responding affirmatively to the Deputy Secretary-General’s proposal, the Chinese delegation expressed their commitment to intensify cross-border investment and collaborative ventures within the frameworks of Mekong-Lancang Cooperation and the Greater Mekong Subregion, further solidifying Cambodia-China bilateral cooperation.

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) has strategically earmarked approximately 1,000 hectares for an industrial zone, a pivotal component of the expansive new airport city. This transformative project, often referred to as the “Airport City,” was officially unveiled on 16 October 2023, underlining its significance in Siem Reap’s development plans. (Read more)
