Chinese Experts Conduct Feasibility Study for High-Speed Rail Project in Cambodia

Chinese infrastructure firm, CHINA METRO GROUP, has sent representatives to Cambodia to study the country’s transportation infrastructure development plans, particularly in the city. The visit followed a request made by Samdech Hun Sen Prime Minister of Cambodia to study the feasibility of two high-speed light rail projects in Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap during an official visit to China last February.  (Read more)

HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, discussed the matter during a meeting with the representatives on March 17, 2023. During the meeting, HE Sun Chanthol introduced the company to a number of study projects related to the development of transport infrastructure in Cambodia, which the ministry is encouraging companies and development partners to invest in.

These projects include a railway connection project from the new Phnom Penh Airport, a railway connection project from the new airport in Siem Reap, an automatic train operating system (AGT), a subway system (SUBWAY), and a MONORAIL railway development project.

In response, CHINA METRO GROUP expressed its interest in investing in infrastructure development in Cambodia. This development is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce the city’s transportation services cost.

As Cambodia strives to improve its transportation infrastructure, the country is increasingly becoming an attractive destination for foreign investors. With Chinese firms like CHINA METRO GROUP showing keen interest, Cambodia is poised to experience significant growth in the transportation sector in the coming years.
