US$165M Hong Kong -Phnom Penh Submarine Cable to Complete in 2024

The Hong Kong-Phnom Penh submarine fiber-optic cable project, valued at over US$165 million and spanning 2,715 kilometers, is set to be completed in 2024, addressing Cambodia’s increasing demand for reliable internet access. This significant development was announced by Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Chea Vandeth, during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation on the verfy.gov.kh on 2 May 2023.

Highlighting the project’s progress, H.E. Vandeth stated, “The submarine cable project connecting Hong Kong and Phnom Penh, worth over US$165 million, is currently underway with technicians working diligently to expedite its completion.”

He further revealed that by 2024, Cambodia will have access to this submarine cable network, offering high-speed internet connectivity and ample capacity to meet the nation’s current internet requirements.

The minister emphasized that the budget allocated for the Hong Kong-Phnom Penh submarine fiber optic network is a loan from the Chinese government. Cambodia plans to utilize revenue generated from internet services to repay the loan.

Notably, this project has received approval and support from inter-ministerial bodies, aiming to advance high-speed and affordable internet availability across Cambodia.

This upcoming submarine cable connection signifies a significant milestone in Cambodia’s journey towards enhanced internet connectivity, promising to facilitate digital growth and open new opportunities for individuals, businesses, and the nation as a whole.
