US$6 Million Bran Oil Refinery Ready for Sale in Battambang

A $6 million investment in a medium-sized bran oil refinery in Battambang province is set to go on sale after the Khmer New Year, according to RFI on 17 April 2023. The Cambodian jasmine rice refinery can refine more than 10 tons of cooking oil using about 50 to 100 tons of crude bran.

Chhem Chandara, President of Medium Enterprise of Cambodia Rice Olive Company Limited, said that the bran oil can eliminate 12% of bad fats in the human body, such as cholesterol and fatty liver. He also assured that the use of some chemicals to convert the oil from the crude bran is in accordance with the World Health Organization and does not affect the health of consumers.

The refining process involves four stages, which include:

  1. cleaning the raw and cooked bran,
  2. converting the oil from the cleaned bran,
  3. mixing, purifying, and removing the wax in the bran oil, and
  4. packaging the final product for sale in the market. At this stage, the use of chemicals in the process is not uncommon, as even in India and Japan, chemicals are used to refine bran oil.

This $6 million investment is expected to boost Cambodia’s economy, especially in the agriculture sector. With the production of bran oil, it will also create job opportunities for locals and help reduce Cambodia’s dependency on imports. This latest development will surely be an opportunity for investors looking to expand their portfolio in the agriculture sector.
