Australia Drives $10 Million Investment to Catalyze Cambodia’s Cashew Processing Potential

Partnering with global agribusiness leader Olam Food Ingredients, the initiative aims to expand daily processing by 80 metric tons, recover over $125 million in lost annual revenue, and protect local farmers from market volatility

In a strategic move to unlock the value of Cambodia’s agricultural sector, Australia is driving an investment initiative of up to $10 million to significantly enhance the Kingdom’s domestic cashew nut processing capabilities. The announcement, released by the Australian Embassy in Cambodia, highlights a critical effort to bridge the structural gap between raw agricultural production and high-value domestic processing.

Despite ranking as the second-largest producer of raw cashew nuts in the world, Cambodia currently processes only about 5% of its total yield within its borders. This severe bottleneck in local processing capacity causes the national economy to forfeit more than $125 million in potential annual value-added revenue, while leaving Cambodian farmers and local traders exposed to seasonal price instability and international market fluctuations.

To address this economic shortfall, Australia is partnering with Olam Food Ingredients (ofi), a major global agribusiness company that commands between 20 and 25% of the global cashew nut market. The strategic partnership aims to scale up Cambodia’s local processing capacity by 80 metric tons per day while mobilizing up to $10 million in targeted capital investment for the domestic cashew processing industry.

Reaffirming its diplomatic and economic commitment, the Australian Embassy emphasized that attracting high-quality foreign investment remains a cornerstone of its engagement in the Kingdom. By fostering sustainable job creation, supporting local agribusinesses, and building downstream industrial capacity, the program aims to help Cambodia construct a resilient, self-sustaining economy with long-term prosperity.
