Cambodia and Laos Fast-Track Site Selection for Ropov River Bridge

In a significant move to boost bilateral trade and connectivity, the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic are expediting the site selection process for the Ropov River bridge, which will connect Preah Vihear province in Cambodia with Champasak province in Laos.

This initiative emerged from discussions during a recent official visit by Lao Foreign Minister H.E. Thongsavanh Phomvihane to Cambodia on July 30, 2025. Both Foreign Ministers, H.E. Prak Sokhonn of Cambodia and H.E. Phomvihane, emphasized the importance of enhancing cross-border connectivity and reinforced their commitment to accelerating the technical work necessary for the bridge’s development.

The potential for a cross-border bridge was initially highlighted during a meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia and Lao Prime Minister Sonxay Siphandon on March 25, 2024, in Vientiane, where they explored avenues for increased collaboration between the two nations. (Read more)

Not only does the proposed bridge represent a vital infrastructure project aimed at strengthening economic ties, but it also reflects a shared vision for enhancing cooperation in a variety of areas important to both countries.

Both governments affirm that the construction of the border bridge symbolizes an important step towards fostering a deeper partnership and advancing mutual interests between Cambodia and Laos.
