Cambodia and Vietnam Strengthen Cross-Border Connectivity to Boost Trade and Tourism

Minister Peng Ponea and Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Official Nguyen Minh Vu discuss expressway synchronization and seaport connectivity in Phnom Penh

The bilateral ties between Cambodia and Vietnam are set to receive a substantial infrastructural upgrade as both nations move forward with concrete plans to synchronize their major transportation networks. This strategic vision took center stage during a high-level bilateral meeting held at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport headquarters on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 2, 2026. HE Peng Ponea, the Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport, hosted HE Nguyen Minh Vu, a Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Standing Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, alongside senior ministry leaders and technical officials from both sides.

The core focus of the diplomatic session revolved around transforming cross-border logistics into a seamless corridor capable of matching the growing economic demands of the region. A primary highlight of the discussions was the alignment of the two countries’ landmark expressway projects, specifically the ongoing Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway on the Cambodian side and the upcoming Ho Chi Minh City-Moc Bai Expressway in Vietnam. By establishing a direct, high-speed connection between these two crucial economic arteries, both governments aim to drastically reduce travel times and shipping costs for goods moving through the international border.

In addition to overland routes, the two nations are exploring expanded maritime transport networks to diversify regional trade options. The leaders deliberated on establishing direct shipping links between the newly developed Kampot Port in Cambodia and various prominent seaports along the Vietnamese coast. This maritime integration is anticipated to create more robust supply chains and alleviate traffic pressure on existing land borders. To fully capitalize on these connections, the delegation also evaluated the possibility of installing additional infrastructure upgrades at key border checkpoints. These comprehensive improvements are designed to streamline immigration and customs procedures, ultimately serving as a powerful catalyst for escalating bilateral trade volume and reviving cross-border tourism.
