Cambodia Nears Completion of Strategic Border Ring Road in Northeastern Provinces

Funded by the Border Infrastructure Fund, the infrastructure project in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri achieves over 95% of its construction targets

Cambodia’s ambitious infrastructure initiative to establish a continuous border ring road is nearing full completion, with construction teams successfully executing the vast majority of planned developments in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri provinces. From the commencement of works in December 2024 through May 8, 2026, the overarching construction process has reached an impressive 95.92% of its total plan.

According to a progress update released on May 28, 2026, by the Task Force for the Management of the Border Infrastructure Fund, the extensive development has been heavily supported by dedicated resources via the specialized fund. The body highlighted that the project represents a critical step forward in securing and developing the nation’s remote frontier regions.

Over the course of the 17-month construction timeline, engineering units and clearing crews encountered dense terrain but maintained a steady pace. The task force reported that workers successfully cleared a 5m wide corridor through the forest landscape, marking out a precise and functional path stretching across 264.40km on actual land. For the first route, a 20m-wide road was dug, totaling 254.90km. For the road axis, valleys were cleared, mountain slopes were lowered, mountain walls were cut, and rainwater drainage ditches were dug. The road body was built, with a length of 252.90km, and crushed stone-compacted was laid, with a length of 242.9km.

The overall result of the border ring road construction process is that approximately 95.92% of the overall plan has been achieved, of which Mondulkiri province has achieved 100%, and Ratanakiri province has achieved 91.48%.

It is worth noting that the Royal Government of Cambodia commenced construction of the 250km border ring road on 01 Nov 2024, with a total budget of nearly $26,967,609, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2027.

With only a small fraction of the layout remaining, officials express high confidence that the border corridor will achieve total completion shortly, paving the way for improved regional connectivity and localized economic integration. (read more)
