Housing ministry delegates participate in UN-Habitat supported program focusing on the “Housing at the Centre” approach to build climate resilience across Asian cities

Gangwon State: As rapid urbanization and environmental vulnerabilities continue to reshape municipalities across Asia, sustainable housing strategies have emerged as a critical foundation for resilient urban development. Addressing these systemic challenges, delegates from the General Department of Housing under Cambodia’s Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction attended a specialized regional training course titled “Housing at the Centre Approach for Urban Resilience in Asian Cities” in Gangwon State, Republic of Korea, reported on August 27, 2026. The initiative was co-organized by the International Urban Training Center (IUTC), UN-Habitat, and Gangwon State.

The intensive training program focused on technical capacity building, cross-border knowledge exchange, and the practical application of the “Housing at the Centre” framework across Asian urban contexts. By positioning housing at the core of national and local urban agendas, this methodology seeks to enhance municipal resilience against climate change impacts and the compounding pressures of rapid urban expansion. Participants examined how aligning human-centered housing policies with land-use governance reduces disaster risk, upgrades informal settlements, and elevates urban living standards.

Cambodia’s engagement in this regional initiative reflects a commitment by the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction to integrate global best practices into national development frameworks. Applying the “Housing at the Centre” principles enables Cambodian planners to structure affordable, safe housing policies that align with climate adaptation goals, ensuring expanding urban centers remain inclusive and resilient against environmental shocks such as severe weather events and urban flooding.

In conclusion, the participation of Cambodian housing officials in this South Korea-hosted training marks an essential step toward shaping resilient and sustainable urban ecosystems. By anchoring housing and human rights at the heart of urban development strategies, Cambodia strengthens its institutional capacity to manage rapid urbanization while driving long-term climate resilience and inclusive socio-economic growth.
