Cambodia-Japan Special Economic Zone Unveiled: A Strategic Alliance for Economic Prosperity

In a pivotal meeting between key inter-ministries and a high-level Japanese delegation led by HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, discussions unfolded on a groundbreaking initiative—the establishment of the Cambodia-Japan Special Economic Zone. Chaired by HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the meeting aimed to foster a robust platform enticing increased Japanese investments within the Cambodian landscape.

The strategic dialogue delved into two major initiatives— (1) Primarily, the expansion of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, poised to evolve into a regional port hub. (2) Secondly, the focus turned to the comprehensive study and groundwork for the Cambodia-Japan Special Economic Zone. This specialized economic zone is meticulously designed to catalyze heightened interest and participation from Japanese investors, further fortifying economic ties between the two nations.

Attendees at the meeting included HE Say Sam Al, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction, HE Keo Ratanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, HE Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, along with officials from relevant ministries and agencies. Representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cambodia also played a significant role in shaping the discourse.

Beyond the specific economic zones, the meeting provided a platform for deliberations on the Comprehensive Intermodal Transport and Logistics Masterplan 2023-2033 (CIT-MP). Coordinated by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Supreme National Economic Council, this master plan harmonizes seven key master plans to streamline the movement of goods, passengers, and services within Cambodia, the region, and globally.
