Cambodia to Build a Large-Scale COVID-19 Hospital Replacing Current Temporary Locations

Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that Cambodia plans to build a new large-scale modern COVID-19 treatment centre to transfer patients out from the Olympic Stadium and other private properties currently being used as treatment centres.

This announcement was made at the inauguration ceremony of NR11 connecting Neak Leung to Tbong Khmum on Monday 6 December 2021.(Read more)

According to Hun Sen, the centre will be located in Phnom Penh and also equipped with the latest technology, with the capacity to accommodate tens of thousands of people.

PM Hun Sen also ordered Phnom Penh Governor HE Khuong Sreng to start seeking locations and ensuring that the construction is completed before 2022. After that, patients will be transferred out from the Olympic Stadium, while the stadium can be used for sport purposes.

The government will also return the current temporary treatment centres such as the Premier Sen Sok Convention Centre, Diamond Island Convention Centre, Piphop Thmey Centre, among others back to the private sector by the end of December this year.

On this occasion, the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia also confirmed that China is working with the Cambodian Ministry of Health to establish a vaccine factory in Cambodia, which can be around next year. (Read more)
