Cambodia to Upgrade National Road 4 Section in Chbar Mon to Drive Regional Economic Growth

The Kampong Speu Provincial Administration recently announced a comprehensive infrastructure initiative aimed at upgrading the aesthetics and functionality of a key section of National Road 4 within Chbar Mon City. The project is strategically designed to transform the province into a vital economic and commercial center for the region. This development plan was detailed in a presentation by HE Khlot Ratana, State Secretary of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction. The targeted section spans 6 kilometers, which translates to 1 kilometer of development when accounting for both sides of the roadway, and will feature a uniform road width of 14 meters. The construction zone will begin from the Total Petroleum Station and extend to the eastern side of the Pou Thlok Bridge.

According to the state secretary, this major infrastructure initiative is intended to elevate the city’s public profile, stimulate local economic growth, and advance long-term sustainable urbanization goals. By establishing a modern and vibrant urban environment, provincial authorities hope to attract further private sector investments, such as manufacturing plants and commercial enterprises, which will ultimately generate more employment opportunities for local residents. Furthermore, the project aims to reshape Chbar Mon City into a dedicated green city while simultaneously bolstering the national transport and tourism sectors. Given that National Road 4 serves as a critical economic artery connecting to the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, the planned improvements will significantly ease cargo logistics, reduce transportation costs, and enhance overall supply chain efficiency.

The upgrading project will introduce various modern public amenities to ensure a well-organized and inclusive traffic system. These facilities include designated bicycle lanes, pedestrian walkways, specialized pathways tailored for people with disabilities, dedicated motorcycle lanes, general vehicle parking zones, and specific bus stops. The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction expects that upon completion, this upgraded corridor of National Road 4 will evolve into one of the most attractive and high-potential commercial, economic, and tourism hubs in Kampong Speu Province. While the long-term vision is clear, specific details regarding the total budget allocation, the exact project commencement timeline, and the contracted construction firms have not yet been disclosed.
