Chinese & Canadian investors Looking to Introduce Advanced Technology to Key Sectors in Cambodia

Delegates from the Asia-Pacific Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (APASME), including representatives from Canadian and Chinese business communities, aim to provide technology and machinery solutions to enhance Cambodia’s agriculture, water management, food processing, and industrial development.

This was discussed during a meeting on 13 January 2024 with HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation. During the meeting, Lang Wangkai, a representative from a Chinese technology company, shared his insights on becoming a technology leader, outlining three essential stages: learning, localization, and developmental technology.

He noted that Cambodia’s development strategy aligns with China’s expertise, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and physical sciences, among other advanced technologies. In response, HE Hem Vandy acknowledged that Cambodia is an emerging market that is in the process of strengthening its essential support sectors, such as skills development, logistics, and energy cost reduction.

The minister encouraged the delegation to bring their technology, knowledge, and experience to Cambodia as a foundation for further investment. He mentioned that the Royal Government is open to organizing special economic zones for targeted priority areas.

Finally, the minister requested that APASME establish an office in Cambodia to focus on researching and developing climate-resilient and high-yield varieties and investing in producing high-value-added goods such as spices, packaging products, and luxury rice wine. He highlighted the opportunity to leverage the reputation of Cambodian rice, recognized as the “best rice in the world.”
