Construction Progress Update on Bassac River Bridge Project

The ambitious project to build a bridge across the Bassac River, connecting Chak Angre Krom to Prek Pra, has reached a significant milestone, now standing at 41% completion. Project spokesperson and Ministry of Public Works and Transport representative, Mr. Phon Rim, announced that the construction remains on schedule and may even finish ahead of the planned timeline.

Since the project commenced, the construction site has been bustling with activity, adhering strictly to technical standards and quality contracts, ensuring that both workmanship and aesthetics meet high expectations. As of early August 2025, the construction has been ongoing for 17 months, with only 25 months left to achieve the ambitious goal of completing the project by early 2028.

Mr. Phon Rim detailed the current status of the bridge’s construction, indicating substantial progress on various components. The bridge foundation is approximately 61.50% complete, comprising 156 foundation pillars, 137 main pillars, 20 footings, 9 beams, and 12 under-girders. Additionally, the structure beneath the bridge has reached 26.12% completion, with 12 bridge pillars, 6 additional pillars, 52 additional bridge pillars, 24 beams, and 34 beam-to-beam bridge head beams already constructed.

The project was officially inaugurated on February 19, 2024, with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Hun Sen and former Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, His Excellency Wang Wentian. Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the existing Monivong Bridge while enhancing connectivity between National Road 1 and Chbar Ampov District. This vital infrastructure will also support the socio-economic ties between Phnom Penh, the southern regions, and the Techo International Airport in Takhmao City. (Read more)
