Bridge Construction Over Bassac River Progresses Steadily

The construction of the bridge spanning the Bassac River between Chak Angre Krom and Prek Pra is taking shape, with the project now 36% complete, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

As of mid-June 2025, significant strides have been made on the bridge. The overall impact resolution process is nearing completion, with 98% of the necessary arrangements finalized. Currently, construction on the eastern bridge has seen substantial progress, with the foundation completed at approximately 66.5%. This includes 156 foundation pillars, of which 137 are finished, alongside 20 piers, 9 of which have been completed, and 12 lower connecting beams, with 8 already in place.

In addition to the foundation, the structural work beneath the bridge stands at around 25.12% completion. This encompasses 12 bridge piers, where 6 are done, along with 52 additional bridge piers, with 24 completed, and 34 connecting beams, where 10 have been installed, among other critical tasks.

While the construction work is ongoing, Phnom Penh authorities are accelerating efforts to finalize the impact resolution, with 98% of cases resolved. It’s noteworthy that only 3 families have declined the total compensation package of USD 3,320,761.86 offered for the relocation process.

The bridge itself is set to stretch 1,650 meters in total, including 845.7 meters for the bridge span and 804.3 meters for the connecting roadway. The project features a road width of 27 meters on both the bridge and the connecting road. This ambitious infrastructure project is being executed by Shanghai Construction Company, with oversight from the Guangzhou Wan An Company. The total investment for the bridge is USD 60.2 million, provided through a concessional loan from the Chinese government, complemented by funding from the Royal Government of Cambodia for impact resolution, mine clearance, and associated taxes.
