Digital Twin Propels World’s Largest Next-Gen Geothermal Project to Record-Breaking Efficiency

US firm Fervo Energy has successfully deployed advanced 3D subsurface modeling technology to unlock the full potential of the world’s largest next-generation geothermal development.

The Cape Station project, located in Beaver County, Utah, is currently redefining the boundaries of clean energy production by leveraging Bentley Systems’ specialized software suite to navigate complex geological formations with unprecedented precision.

The firm used integration of Bentley’s Leapfrog Energy, Oasis montaj, and Seequent Central for this project.

First, by utilizing Leapfrog Energy, the team successfully integrated diverse datasets to visualize the subterranean environment before a single drill bit touched the ground. This predictive capability proved essential as the project required drilling through over 105,000 feet of notoriously challenging granitic basement rock.

Meanwhile, by leveraging Oasis montaj and Leapfrog, the team was able to generate detailed 3D subsurface characterization models to meet the requirements for an optimally designed power plant.

Lastly, Seequent Central provided a centralized environment that enabled real-time tracking and management of massive geoscientific datasets, ensuring that all stakeholders remained aligned throughout the drilling process.

This level of digital oversight allowed for remarkably accurate temperature and geologic predictions, which directly informed the placement of twenty fully horizontal enhanced geothermal system wells.

By using these technologies, Fervo Energy reported a flawless 100% well success rate across more than 204,000 total feet of drilling. The efficiency also enabled the team to complete drilling operations 18% under budget.

Besides, Fervo confirmed a power output of 10 megawatts from a single well—a figure that triples the performance of conventional geothermal systems and sets a new industry benchmark for power density.

Bentley’s infrastructure software is also accelerating the commercial viability of clean energy. The accuracy of the digital models has shortened development timelines and provided the data certainty necessary to fast-track project financing.

As Cape Station moves toward its goal of delivering 500 megawatts of low-carbon electricity, the project stands as a testament to how digital twin technology and integrated modeling can transform the economic landscape of renewable energy, projecting a $1.1 billion local economic impact over its lifecycle.
