Government Set to Transform Kep and Sihanoukville Islands into Vibrant Economic Hubs

High-level inter-ministerial delegation concludes field inspections to finalize development master plans for the Kingdom’s coastal jewels

In a strategic push to unlock the economic potential of Cambodia’s coastline, the Royal Government has set a clear course for the revitalization and development of islands across Kep and Sihanoukville provinces. This initiative reached a significant milestone following a comprehensive two-day field inspection and evaluation mission conducted on March 26-27, 2026, aimed at assessing the current state of development and refining long-term growth strategies for the region.

The mission was led by His Excellency Chea Vuthy, Secretary General of the Investment Board of Cambodia (CIB) of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), who also serves as the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Study, Evaluation, and Preparation of Island Master Plans. The delegation’s primary objective was to observe first-hand the progress of ongoing investment projects and evaluate the feasibility of future developments that align with the government’s vision for sustainable and high-value tourism.

According to His Excellency Chea Vuthy, the field mission provided essential data for a forthcoming progress report to be submitted to the Prime Minister. This report will serve as a foundational document for the government’s decision-making process, ensuring that island development remains robust, environmentally conscious, and economically impactful. The Secretary General noted that the inter-ministerial commission has already completed the initial studies and drafted master plans for several islands identified as having significant economic potential.

The inspection tour highlighted several investment projects on islands within the geographical areas of both Kep and Sihanoukville that have demonstrated noteworthy advancement. These developments are expected to contribute significantly to the local economy by creating jobs and attracting international visitors seeking unique island experiences. By integrating modern infrastructure with the natural beauty of the coastal environment, the government aims to position Cambodia’s islands as premier destinations within the regional travel market.

As these master plans move toward implementation, the Royal Government continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. The successful transformation of these islands into lively economic zones is anticipated to be a cornerstone of Cambodia’s broader strategy to diversify its tourism sector and enhance its overall national competitiveness.
