Gov’t seeking funds for PP mass transit as feasibility studies continue

The feasibility studies for the Phnom Penh mass transit projects are ongoing, one of which has been completed, and the other two are awaiting the results. In the meantime, the government is also seeking funds to implement this massive plan.

HE Ly Borin, under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, recently said that the studies take time due to the estimated high investment cost.

“One of studies, which is the sky train, has been completed, but the project is too costly…so, it really depends on the government to decide,” said HE Ly.

A while ago, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport had revealed that there are three choices—sky train, monorail train, and subway train. However, the ministry has yet to decide on which any of which.

According to Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol, JICA has completed the sky train feasibility study. For now, the ministry is still waiting for the results of the monorail train project and subway train project, which were studied by a Chinese firm.

Once completed, the ministry will compare and analyze three of them so that they can use the most affordable project that best-fit Phnom Penh city.

The cost of this train system project is estimated at US$1 billion to US$1.4 billion.
