GCF Approves $42.8 Million Project to Support Tonle Sap Farmers

The Green Climate Fund (GCF), one of the world’s largest climate fund, has approved a $42.8 million project, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and two Cambodian ministries, to support farmers in the northern Tonle Sap region of Cambodia.

The project, titled “Public-Social-Private Partnerships for Ecologically-Sound Agriculture and Resilient Livelihoods in Northern Tonle Sap Basin” (PEARL), aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers, local communities, and other value chain actors in the region in response to the increasing threats associated with climate change. This project is formulated under the leadership of Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, with technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

“The project includes a $36.2 million grant from the GCF, and $6.6 million in co-financing from the ministry of agriculture, the ministry of environment, and FAO,” FAO said in a March 15 press release adding that the project received approval at the 35th GCF Board meeting in Songdo, Republic of Korea.

“The approved amount will fund the six-year project that will benefit 450,000 smallholder farmers and local value-chain actors in the northern basin area,” the report added.

H.E. Dr. Say Samal, the Minister of Environment, has welcomed the approval of the PEARL project, calling it a significant step towards addressing the urgent adaptation challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the Tonle Sap region.

The approval of this project will provide much-needed support to farmers in the region and contribute to global efforts to address the challenges of climate change.
