India Plans to Connect to Cambodia by Highway

The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of India have discussed the implementation of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Expressway project and the expansion to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

The discussions were held between Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and his Indian counterpart HE Narendra Modi via an online video on 18 May.

During the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of implementing the India-Myanmar-Thailand Expressway project and the expansion of the connection to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

The Prime Minister of India stated that the project is in line with the master plan to connect to ASEAN from India.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India has stated that India will provide a US$1 billion loan to Cambodia under the Mekong-Mekong cooperation.

The Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) is an initiative by six countries – India​ and five ASEAN countries, namely, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam to cooperate in tourism, culture, education, as well as transport, and​​ communications.
