Japanese Investment in Cambodia Approaches $3 Billion to Anchor Strategic Ties

High-level talks between National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary and Ambassador Ueno Atsushi highlight a $2.6 billion trade milestone and a new push for advanced technology training.

The enduring bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Japan, built on deep-seated mutual trust, has yielded extensive, tangible milestones for the Cambodian people, with Japanese cumulative investment capital reaching an impressive $2.9 billion between 1994 and 2025. This robust economic partnership was central to high-level discussions held on July 3, 2026, between Samdech Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, and His Excellency Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia.

During the diplomatic session, the National Assembly President characterized Japan as an exceptionally reliable and loyal ally to Cambodia. She emphasized that Tokyo’s multi-sectoral support—spanning critical areas such as humanitarian demining, human resource development, agricultural modernization, and international trade—has consistently manifested into practical benefits that directly uplift the daily lives of Cambodian citizens. This close cooperation is clearly reflected in recent commercial indicators, with the total bilateral trade volume between the two nations surging past $2.6 billion in the year 2025 alone. Throughout the three-decade window leading up to 2025, Japan has sustained its position as one of Cambodia’s most vital economic pillars through its $2.9 billion investment footprint.

Ambassador Ueno Atsushi fully concurred with the National Assembly President’s remarks, praising the intimate ties and profound mutual trust shared between the leadership and citizens of both nations. Affirming Japan’s long-term commitment to the region, the Ambassador pledged to actively advance and broaden the scope of bilateral cooperation during his diplomatic mission.

Looking to the future, the Cambodian delegation expressed high expectations for inter-parliamentary diplomacy, noting hopes that institutional relations between both national assemblies will grow stronger and witness more dynamic engagements under the Japanese envoy’s tenure. Furthermore, to prepare its public sector for a rapidly changing global landscape, Cambodia formally requested Japanese support in providing advanced technological training for Cambodian government officials, aiming to build administrative capacity and foster deeper localized innovation.
