Cambodia Automotive Exports Surge to $580 Million in First Quarter as Kingdom Shifts to High Value Manufacturing

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol showcases macroeconomic predictability and a 30% spike in auto component exports at the Nikkei Forum in Tokyo

Cambodia’s automotive industry has marked a significant milestone in the first quarter of 2026, with export values reaching $580 million between January and March, representing a growth of more than 30% compared to the previous year. This economic achievement was highlighted by His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia. Delivering his remarks as the high-level representative of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, the Deputy Prime Minister shared the data during the thirty-first International Nikkei Forum on The Future of Asia, held on June 11, 2026, in Tokyo, Japan, under the theme of Jointly Building a More Resilient and Prosperous Asia.

During the prestigious regional gathering, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol emphasized that Cambodia’s premier competitive advantage for global investors is its predictability, built upon a foundation of structural transparency and dependable institutional partnerships. He noted that the kingdom has demonstrated robust economic potential and enduring macroeconomic stability, supported by an investment law framework that stands out as one of the most open and welcoming in the entire Asian region.

To substantiate this claim of strong investor confidence, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed to recent data from the Council for the Development of Cambodia. In 2025, the council approved a total of 630 investment projects with an aggregate value exceeding $10 billion. This upward trajectory has extended cleanly into the current year, with the first quarter of 2026 alone witnessing the approval of 146 new projects valued at approximately $2.5 billion.

These figures underscore Cambodia’s rapid industrial evolution away from low-cost textiles and toward high-value-added sectors, particularly the manufacturing of automotive tires and specialized vehicle components. The $580 million export total achieved in the first quarter of 2026 reflects this transition, driven largely by the 30 percent year-on-year surge in automotive components compared to 2025 levels. According to official council assessments, Japan continues to maintain its position as the single largest destination market for Cambodia’s expanding automotive industry exports.
