Kampot has 4 landscape protection areas on an area of 217 hectares

Kampot province, known for its stunning natural beauty and unique landscapes, is taking steps to protect its environment and wildlife. As the Ministry of Environment reported on 11 April 2023, there are currently four landscape protection areas in the province spanning a total area of 217 hectares. These areas are located in Chres village, Koh Chamkar village, and Koh Tnaot village, across two communes – South Boeung Sala commune and Prek Kris commune – in Kampong Trach district.

To promote eco-tourism and research, the state has recently inaugurated a new 16-meter-high bird-watching tower in the Anlong Pring Landscape Protected Area, one of the four protected areas. The tower was built with funds from the sale of carbon credits.

According to HE Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, the ministry is also building 10 animal viewing towers in various provinces, including Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Prey Veng, Takeo, Kampot, Kep, and Kampong Cham. Seven towers have already been completed and are in operation, while three others are under construction.

The Anlong Pring Landscape Protected Area is home to a rare and endangered species of crane. In 2023, the area recorded 103 cranes, including nine adolescents – an increase of six from 2022, when there were 97 cranes and 11 adolescents. This is a significant achievement in the preservation of the species.

Kampot province’s efforts to preserve its landscapes and wildlife demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and responsible environmental practices. The province is a beautiful tourist destination and a role model for other regions to follow.
