Large-Scale Infrastructure Renovations in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville Part of Tourism Recovery Roadmap

The government earlier this week approved the Roadmap on Cambodia’s Tourism Restoration Plan, of which the large-scale infrastructure renovations in Sihanoukville and Siem Reap are the most crucial drivers in attracting more tourists after the pandemic subsides.

The road map is divided into three stages. The first and the most important is the rehabilitation of tourism through public investment, such as improving roads and other infrastructure in priority tourist destinations.

Those include the 34-road renovations in Sihanoukville and the 38-road enhancement project in Siem Reap.

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has said that these two major projects will make the two cities more organised and attractive to tourists after completion by the end of 2021.

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen also said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Siem Reap 38-road renovation project that enhancing infrastructure is always a vital choice for a developing country like Cambodia, especially for a tourist destination like Siem Reap.

Better infrastructure not only helps ease the commuting system for both locals and tourists, but also increases interprovincial trade, creates jobs, and boosts the economy.

Though COVID-19 has prevented tourists from travelling to Cambodia and negatively affected the economy, on the positive side, it is a good time for us to upgrade Siem Reap to get ready for even more tourists after the pandemic ends, the PM added.

According to the new roadmap, Cambodia expects to receive about 11 million domestic tourists by 2023 and about 7 million international tourists by 2025.

To date, the construction of the 34 roads in Sihanoukville has been completed and will open for the public this month. The project began in November 2019 and consumed a total budget of US$300 million. (Read more)

Meanwhile, the Siem Reap 38-road project, was about 30% complete as of March. The project will consume a budget of US$150 million and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. (Read more)
