New $32 Million Water Supply System Inaugurated in Battambang to Enhance Urban Resilience

In a significant move to modernize provincial infrastructure, Battambang City officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art water supply system valued at $31.77 million on April 30, 2026. The ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, alongside Battambang Governor His Excellency Sok Lou and representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Cambodia. This initiative represents a milestone in the government’s efforts to ensure sustainable access to clean water for the Kingdom’s growing urban centers.

During the event, Governor Sok Lou provided a comprehensive overview of the project’s technical specifications, highlighting its substantial operational capacity. The newly constructed raw water pumping station is designed to pump 55,000 cubic meters per day, while the treatment plant itself can produce 50,000 cubic meters of clean water daily. The facility is supported by 1.13 kilometers of raw water intake piping and a corresponding 1.13-kilometer discharge line back to the river. To ensure the water reaches residents effectively, an extensive 94-kilometer network of distribution pipes has been laid throughout the region.

The integration of this new plant brings the total production and distribution capacity for the area to 83,520 cubic meters per day. This expanded capacity is expected to serve approximately 13,000 households across four key districts, including Battambang, Sangke, Banan, and Ek Phnom. By providing a reliable and safe water source, the project aims to drastically reduce waterborne diseases and improve the overall standard of living for tens of thousands of citizens in the province.

This project is a primary component of the Provincial Water Supply and Sanitation Project, funded through a strategic partnership and concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank. The successful launch of this facility underscores the commitment of the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation to upgrading public utilities through international cooperation. As Battambang continues to develop as a vital economic hub, this enhanced water infrastructure provides the foundation necessary for both residential well-being and industrial growth. (read more)
