Phnom Penh Unveils Ambitious Plan to Combat Traffic Congestion with Airstrip and Underground Railway

In a bold initiative to tackle rising traffic congestion, the Phnom Penh Municipal Government, led by Governor Khuong Sreng, announced plans for an innovative airstrip and an underground railway at a City Council meeting on October 9. This project aims to enhance transportation links, particularly between the city and the new Techo International Airport.

Governor Sreng emphasized the urgent need for improved infrastructure, stating that while efforts have been made to upgrade drainage systems to alleviate flooding in the capital, traffic issues persist, especially for those traveling from the new airport. The proposed airstrip, which will function as an aerial route, is intended to facilitate smoother transit from Techo International Airport into the heart of Phnom Penh.

“The construction of an air road is crucial for reducing congestion from Techo International Airport to central Phnom Penh,” said Governor Sreng. “We envision this route extending from the Kursov roundabout along Road No. 217 to the vicinity of Chenla Market in Deum Kor.”

Additionally, the administration plans to develop an underground subway system to further ease the flow of traffic into the city. The ambitious dual project reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing urban transport and addressing the increasing demands of a growing population and economy.

The Governor acknowledged that should traffic from the airport continue to escalate as anticipated, the Municipal Administration is prepared to expedite the implementation of both the air road and subway projects.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Government’s proposal marks a significant step toward enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure and ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience for residents and visitors alike. As the city embraces these developments, it signals a transformative era in urban transit solutions for Phnom Penh.
