On Monday 25 June 2018, Phnom Penh City Hall held its fourth meeting with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to discuss plans for the establishment of a wastewater treatment system in the capital.

According to Dr. Ito Mimpei, the delegate from JICA, the wastewater treatment basins to be located in Cheung Ek commune, will need to be constructed on 35,000 square metres of land with the capacity to convert up to 5,000 cubic meters per day of contaminated water into clean water before it is released into the river.

The facility is being fully funded by the Japan government through its development assistance agency JICA.

To ensure the efficiency of the project, according to Dr. Ito, JICA will provide technical training to Cambodian government officials and help draft laws and regulations on the management of the wastewater treatment system. In addition, JICA will also send experts to study the project which will take around four years to complete, he added.
