New Government Allocates US$100M to Boost Agriculture, Focuses on Irrigation Enhancement

In a resolute move to bolster Cambodia’s agricultural sector, the newly formed government has earmarked a substantial budget of US$100 million. This strategic allocation, unveiled by PM Hun Manet during a gathering with 18,000 factory workers from 13 establishments in Phnom Penh’s Por Sen Chey district on the morning of 29 August 2023, underscores the administration’s commitment to fortify farming practices and alleviate challenges faced by local farmers.

PM Hun Manet highlighted the primary objectives of this budget, elucidating its dual focus on mitigating the price volatility of agricultural commodities and amplifying irrigation infrastructure development. In his words, “The Cambodian government has already prepared US$100 million to intervene in agricultural products such as rice and other vegetables.”

“Amidst the fluctuating agricultural prices in the global market, the government’s readiness to step in during times of hardship stands as a pivotal assurance for both producers and consumers,” added the PM.

HE Hun Manet emphasized that while price dynamics remain contingent on international market conditions, the government’s commitment to intervene underscores its determination to shield the agricultural community from adverse fluctuations.

One pressing facet of the strategy pertains to augmenting Cambodia’s irrigation systems, ensuring that farmers have the necessary resources to maximize yields. As PM Hun Manet aptly put it, “Where it is difficult, we help intervene, such as with the lack of an irrigation system.”

Beyond these specific endeavors, the government reaffirms its commitment to rural development through the deployment of agricultural officials across all villages and communes in the nation. This steadfast policy reinforces the administration’s proactive approach to elevate the agricultural sector’s prominence and secure the livelihoods of those dependent on it.
