Tonle Bassac-Kep Waterway and Logistics Initiative named “Prek Chek Funan Techo Project”, costs US$1.7B

The visionary Tonle Bassac-Kep Waterway and Logistics Project, now officially named the “Prek Chek Funan Techo Project,” has received the resounding approval of the Council of Ministers. During a momentous meeting chaired by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the esteemed Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia on 19 May, the council provided valuable recommendations that culminated in the project’s new name. H.E Phay Siphan, a spokesperson for the Royal Government of Cambodia, shared this significant development on Facebook.

The Prek Chek Funan Techo Project, estimated to cost approximately US$1.7 billion, is slated to span four years, as outlined in the report by the Inter-Ministerial Commission responsible for its study and implementation. Extensive research conducted over two years, spearheaded by notable companies such as China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) and CCCC Water Transport Consultant, has laid the foundation for this transformative endeavor.

Envisioned as an innovative waterway system, the project is set to cover a distance of approximately 180 kilometers. Its strategic trajectory begins at the Takeo Canal of the Mekong River, meandering through the Ta Ek Canal of the Bassac River, and subsequently merging with the Ta Hing Canal of the Bassac River in Koh Thom district. Finally, it will extend to the breathtaking coastal landscapes of Kep province, traversing four additional provinces along the way—Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep.

The new waterway promises to revolutionize regional logistics by reducing distances by more than 69 kilometers compared to the existing route along the Bassac River, which connects Phnom Penh Port to Vietnam Port. Moreover, it will shorten the distance by approximately 135 kilometers from Phnom Penh Autonomous Port to Kampot Port. Such streamlined connectivity not only enhances trade and commerce but also strengthens economic ties between Cambodia and neighboring countries. (Read more and more)
