Tonle Sap Environmental Management Project in Banteay Meanchey Nears 100% Completion

Strategic urban sanitation and waste management infrastructure funded by the ADB enters final stages to bolster local health and protect the Kingdom’s vital ecosystem

Serei Saophoan — The Second Upper Tonle Sap Integrated Urban Environmental Management Project in Banteay Meanchey province has reached a significant milestone, with construction now 95% complete as of April 20, 2026. This critical infrastructure initiative, located within the geographical heart of Serei Saophoan city, is poised to finalize its remaining works shortly, as announced by His Excellency Phorn Rim, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, on April 21, 2026.

Developed under a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), this second phase of the environmental improvement project encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of the city’s liquid and solid waste management systems. The technical scope of the project includes the installation of 110.91 kilometers of wastewater drainage pipes and 6.88 kilometers of specialized stormwater drainage lines to mitigate urban flooding. Central to the facility is a newly constructed wastewater treatment plant with a processing capacity of 3,500 cubic meters per day, ensuring that effluent is safely treated before release.

In addition to water management, the project has established a modern solid waste management site, or landfill, featuring a total capacity of 170,000 cubic meters. This facility is designed with advanced environmental safeguards, including a gas extraction system and a dedicated leachate treatment plant to prevent groundwater contamination.

The completion of this project is expected to deliver transformative benefits to the residents of Serei Saophoan by providing a cleaner and more hygienic living environment while reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases. Furthermore, by effectively managing urban waste and runoff, the initiative plays a vital role in the long-term conservation of the Tonle Sap Lake’s delicate ecosystem, protecting one of Cambodia’s most important natural resources for future generations.(read more)
