Transforming Kampong Thom: Cambodian Government’s Vision for a Thriving Tourism Hub

The Cambodian government aims to transform Kampong Thom province into a vibrant tourism hub by establishing two special working groups to prepare a comprehensive tourism development plan. This initiative highlights the province’s rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and abundant natural resources, particularly due to its central location in Cambodia.

The announcement was made during a consultation meeting focused on developing the tourism plan for Kampong Thom province, which HE Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth chaired on 21 January 2025.

During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised the crucial need for well-developed infrastructure in the tourism development plan. He stated, “Kampong Thom province should not merely serve as a transit point for travellers heading to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. We aim to position Kampong Thom as a primary inter-provincial tourist destination, providing visitors with an experience before they reach Siem Reap, Preah Vihear, or Phnom Penh, and connecting it to other tourist attractions.”

To ensure the effective implementation of this plan, HE Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth announced the formation of two special working groups:

  1. Group 1 will concentrate on developing the Sambor Prei Kuk area, known for its cultural and historical significance. This initiative aims to actively engage with surrounding communities and leverage tourism potential in the area to create a multi-faceted tourism development plan.
  2. Group 2 will focus on studying and preparing a vibrant development plan for the Stung Sen area. The aim is to attract more visitors by introducing new tourism products like night markets and scenic boat rides.

Furthermore, the DPM instructed the working groups to revise the draft plan clearly, defining the strategic plan, action plan, implementation institutions, and monitoring mechanisms as per the meeting’s objectives. A final review will then be conducted to prepare the plan for approval by the Ministry of Tourism.

With this ambitious approach to tourism development, Kampong Thom province is poised to become a significant player in Cambodia’s tourism landscape, inviting travellers to explore its unique offerings rather than merely passing through.
